Light painting, or light drawing, is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure.

Realization of a video processing environment for the event “OHM – Percezione del Tempo e Quarta Dimensione”, funded by the ”Estate Fiorentina 2015” festival of Firenze.

The event has taken place in the beautiful cloister of the Basilica di Santo Spirito, in Firenze, involving the creation of a custom spacial environment and a series of light objects of different colors for the attendees, who could use even their smarphones thanks to the QR codes made available on the “palette” at the entrance.
Children, teens, and adults of all ages had fun giving immediate shape to their inspiration by painting with light and seeing their creation projected in real time on the vaults of the sacristy.
During the evening the light painting sessions were interspersed between various attractions created by OHM’s artistic direction, that gave birth to an extremely diverse entertainment going from harpsicordist entr’acte and specifically tailored choreographies for original music composed for the event.

The video processing environment allows to create a “light painting” in a few seconds, by moving bright sources of light in front of a video camera. It the environment it is possible to quickly save the image and upload it to the internet, to erase it and begin with a new “canvas”, and to create a video, so that it is possible to re-enact the creation of the painting.

The event has taken place on the 17th September 2015.
