Synaesthesia at Connector X, STEIM.

On the 5th of April I was invited to play at the Connector event organized by STEIM.
For this occasion I was asked by Fedde Ten Berge to develop a performance for his Pentacle spatialization system, a multichannel environment with 15 hand-made loudspeakers, 3 subwoofers and custom spatialization software.
In the program of the evening there were also students from the Institute of Sonology: Siamak Anvari, Dalton Danks, Chris Vermeulen and Luka Kozlovacki.

Synaesthesia performed at SMC2017!

At the 14th Sound and Music Computing Conference in Espoo, Finland, (5th-8th July 2017), I presented the performance “Synaesthesia”.

The performance was part of the 14 pieces of the music program of the conference. Based on the feedback from the audience the performance was well received, arousing interest over the musical practice and the technology involved in the author’s work.

The SMC Conference is a double-blind peer-reviewed international scientific conference around the core interdisciplinary topics of Sound and Music Computing, now at its 14th edition. The conference was well organised and the program spanned 4 days from early morning to late night. The presentations and sound installations were hosted in the Aalto University campus in Espoo, while the evening concerts took place in the Korjaamo Culture Factory, one of the largest independent arts centres in the Nordic countries.
There were works of very diverse topics and levels, but the community proved to be a compact and warm environment to discuss each own’s interests and passion for music.

How to use a Sense/Stage MiniBee

In my performance setup for Synaesthesia I use the Sense/Stage Minibee, developed by Marije Baalman. The MiniBees are wireless versions of Arduino that can be used in live performances, installations, or whenever there’s a need for wireless communication for sensors and actuators.
Read how to use them in this new tutorial, that describes the steps I made for developing my setup.

Synaesthesia premiered!

On Saturday 22th October I premiered my new live performance “Synaesthesia” in Compagnietheater in Amsterdam, event commisioned by Amsterdam Dance Event and funded by Stimuleringfonds Creatieve Industrie.

The piece was a live electronics solo performance, involving biophysical sensors and active lighting. The inner exploration of the senses was transduced into sound and light through a custom designed sound synthesis that reacted on the various sensors placed on the body of the performer.
